Medical Rescue Helicopter Crash Leaves Five Dead in Tanzania

(MENAFN) Five individuals perished when a medical evacuation helicopter plummeted on Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro during an active rescue operation, authorities confirmed.

Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Simon Maigwa reported the aircraft went down Thursday at approximately 11:30 a.m. East African Time while en route to retrieve climbers who had been ascending the mountain with tourism operator Boby Camping. The helicopter crashed in the extreme-altitude zone situated between Kibo Hut and Barafu Camp—a critical segment of the final approach to Africa's tallest summit, which towers at roughly 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level.

Maigwa disclosed the fatalities included two international tourists, a mountain guide, the aircraft pilot, and a physician deployed as part of the emergency medical team. Authorities reported zero survivors from the wreckage.

Mount Kilimanjaro, a premier global trekking destination, frequently depends on airborne medical evacuations to extract climbers experiencing altitude-related illnesses or sustaining injuries during their expeditions.

The crash location is notorious for oxygen-depleted atmospheric conditions and volatile weather patterns that routinely intensify the complexity and danger of aerial rescue missions.

Emergency response units were mobilized to the impact zone, with official investigations launched to determine the underlying factors behind the fatal accident.
